I stumbled upon this treasure in Google Books.  Then later I found it via the Ohio State University Library (as a trained librarian – let me say – well done – digitizing old books is a pain but worth it).  The book was written by Edward Orton, for whom Orton Hall is named after (one of my favorite buildings on campus).

Report of the Geological Survey of Ohio, Volume 7

By Geological Survey of Ohio

Pages 192 to 207 go into great detail about the brick making process, brick companies and the pros and con’s (all pro) of Salt Glazing bricks, blocks and pavers.  The writing style is interesting in a dated, dry and historical manner.  This is a good and free source for background information.
